iPod Touch Internet

iPod Touch Home Wi-Fi (Wireless internet) Set up.

Ok folks as promised here is a blow by blow tutorial on how to set up your Apple iPod Touch to work with your home wireless network.

Things you need & need to know:
1) An Apple iPod Touch 8GB, 16GB or 32GB.
2) A home Wifi network (Wireless router and an internet connection).
3) A Mac or PC (Desktop or Laptop).
4) A WEP KEY or How to access your routers administration page ( if your computer accesses the internet wirelessly you will have had to type this in to it in order to set up your connection).

Let’s get started switch on your router if it’s not already and allow it to connect, now switch on your iPod Touch and tap the settings icon.

Apple iPod Touch Settings icon

Now tap Wi-Fi at the top and you should the word “ON” opposite the word Wi-Fi and then a list of networks you can join and then Ask to join networks this should also have the word “ON” opposite it if either say off tap them until they say on.

Next tap the network you wish to join (Your network) and enter the WEP key, wait a little while and you should see a tick next to the network name, this means your all done, navigate back to the home screen and browse the web.

If you get the nasty “unable to join network” message then we need to do a little more work to get you up and running. I connect via sky broadband so I will talk you through the process of getting connect using my router and ISP, but this should help others using other ISP’s and other routers as the principals should be similar if not the same.

First I get on the computer and connect an Ethernet cable from my computer to my router so I can access the routers admin page. I do this by opening Firefox (You can use any browser) and typing http://192.168.0.1 and hitting enter then I type my username and password for the router admin, in my case “user = admin and password = sky” you will need to find this out from your router manufacturers website, documents or your ISP.

Router administration home page

I then click a link in the top left corner entitled “setup”.

Wireless router Wi-Fi settings page

At the top of this new page I can see my network name SKY55680, a little further down the page I can see some radio buttons and WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) is checked I also see my network key, you would be forgiven for thinking this is all you have to type to get connected. Well in my case not, in order to connect I need to change the radio button from WPA-PSK to WEP. I then change the authentication type to Shared under WEP Security Encryption and enter a pass phrase in the box provided and hit generate you then get 4 Keys one of which is selected at this point you want to click the apply link at the bottom of the page.

Now go back to your iPod Touch and enter the Key which has the checked radio button next to it (on your routers admin page) into your iPod Touch (Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Your Network).

Just a final note if you have changed from WAP to WEP within your router you will also need to enter the new Key into any other computer or device that uses your wireless network so it’s worth writing it down and running round the house re-connecting everything.
